Huge Opportunities As The Legacy Returns! + Weekly Reminders

With the marching/football season off to a great start, it is time for us to begin focusing in earnest on the upcoming marching band competition hosted by the Carrollton Trojan Band Boosters here at Grisham Stadium. This year The Legacy of Champions is on Saturday, October 13th and is an all day event. Our event is fast becoming one of the premier competitions in the whole state and is also one of our most successful fundraising events with the funds going to reduce the cost of our biennial band trips. All students are required to work this event and all parents are expected to volunteer as well. We need everyone involved! There is a great variety of volunteer opportunities available, so it should be easy for everyone to find something to do that day to ensure another great year for our guests.  We even need your ATVs, trailers, and cooking skills too! Sign-ups for volunteers are broken up by duty areas and are listed on our VOLUNTEER PAGE below with a brief summary of the types of things you will be doing the day of the event. Full descriptions can be found in the details area of each sign-up after clicking on a particular sign-up link. We will also be having a volunteer meeting on September 27, 2018 at 6:30pm in the band room to provide more details, offer training, answer any questions you may have, and outline what to expect that day. Please make every effort to attend this meeting. Your participation and preparation is imperative to our success!

Finally, the competition is also an excellent opportunity to honor your band student and seniors!

SrSampleMost of us know how hard our band students work and how dedicated they are, but how often do we tell them or recognize their efforts. With that in mind, we wanted to share a unique opportunity with all of our supporters for honoring your band student(s). In conjunction with the Legacy of Champions Marching Band Competition, we produce an outstanding, professional event program that gives parents, grandparents, guardians, friends, or loved ones the opportunity to purchase a custom, personal ad to recognize your band student. Show your pride while preserving their memories and accomplishments to be cherished for years to come.

The Weekly Update

Trip deposits were due last Friday.  Since there is an electronic option, you can still sign-up, but it needs to be done right NOW, please?!

Also, we can share that the band has been OFFICIALLY INVITED by the Hollywood Christmas Parade Committee!  I had faith and confidence that it would happen, but I know that some may have been hesitant to sign-up until receiving this official confirmation!

This is an important step in our band program’s journey as we begin applying to the larger parades like the Rose Bowl Parade, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the London New Year’s Day Parade.  It is important that we perform well in this parade with as many students as possible to make sure that we are representing our program appropriately.

      • Bring money for concessions but we will also feed the students pizza for dinner
  • Saturday: Winter Guard competition at Alpharetta HS

Winter Guard does it again!

Congratulations to our Winter Guard under the direction of Corey Hawkins and Emma Turner, who performed at Kennesaw Mountain HS on Saturday.  They placed first, but due to an unfinished prop their score was reduced putting them in third.  Many contests waive the penalties for the first few weeks, but we learned from it this time.  Mr. Hawkins has already made arrangements to fix the prop tomorrow.  Onward and upward! So proud of our band program for continuing to set the bar high! Congratulations, ladies!

West Georgia Band Community Join Forces for GMEA Performance

Congratulations to the University of West Georgia Wind Ensemble and their directors Dr. Josh Byrd and Dr. Cale Self for their inspiring performance at this year’s Georgia Music Educators Association In-Service Conference in Athens, GA.  In an effort to showcase the West Georgia area’s students he invited four trumpets from Carrollton and four trumpets from Central to accompany the Wind Ensemble on their performance.  The antiphonal trumpets added that next level of WOW to an already exciting program.  The four high school students are pictured above: Central’s Connor Abernathy, Riley Mitchell, Hannah Puckett, Katie Thompson, and Carrollton’s Ryan Schumann, Matthew Harris, Melissa Lanier, and Lainey Driver.  Before the concert, Temple High School’s flute choir (Chuck Jindrich, director and Carrollton Band Dad) conducted by Elisa Lyle (we are lucky to have her work with our students too!) performed in the lobby.  It was a great testament to the band programs here in West Georgia!  Proud that we could play a part! Go West!

GSU in Concert NEXT WEEK! Thursday, February 8th!

Admission is free and open to the public.  Attendance is required for all Carrollton High School band students.  GSU is preparing for the College Band Directors National Association Conference, so this will be an inspiring performance for our students!  Don’t miss it!

Chick-fil-A Bowl Details

As you know, our band has been invited to participate in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

The cost of our student tickets has been generously donated.  This is an event that most bands travel to Atlanta to participate in as their “band trip” for the year and pay for their individual tickets.  We are fortunate that we were invited to participate and our student tickets have been purchased for us.

All parent tickets including for chaperone and equipment crew cost $175.00 each and includes admission to the game, Fanfest, security clearance to enter with the band, and a credential.  We understand that this is an expensive game admission.  If you would like to chaperone but not attend Fanfest or the game – admission to the parade is free and you would be welcome to either hang out on the bus or could visit the CNN center for lunch/etc? While the students attend the game.

If you buy your tickets through us, the tickets will be blocked together with the student tickets.  We will all be sitting in the same general area.  Because the ticket requires entrance as a group, all tickets purchased by parents will be handed out after the parade on 1/1/2018.  You can purchase your tickets from now until November 17, 2017.  Tickets can be paid for by check (made out to the CHS Band Boosters), cash (in an envelope with name of student and name of parent), or online at

Great Opportunities Coming Up Next Month at UWG

UWG-For many of us who grew up in the West Georgia area I think we take for granted how blessed we are to have a thriving university like the University of West Georgia right in our back yard. When it comes to enriching our band students’ development, the university provides us with outstanding resources and opportunities without large investments of travel, time, and finances. There are two such opportunities coming up in February that Dr. Josh Byrd, Director of Bands at UWG wanted us to share with you.

First is the Destination: Music event, which takes place on February 15 and is open to high school juniors and seniors interested in checking out a day in the life of a music student.  Complete details and registration information can be found by here: Destination Music 2016 Complete Info

Also taking place the same day will be UWG’s Scholarship Day, where students will have the opportunity to interview for Presidential Scholarships.  For students interested in this event as well, please register using the following Scholarship Day link (note: students must be accepted to the University by February 1 in order to be considered for the Presidential Awards from this event).

Next up is UWG’s 12th Annual Saxophone Symposium, which takes place on February 20. This is a great opportunity for students to work on anything and everything related to the saxophone with Dr. John Bleuel as well as participate in a reed and sound clinic with UWG faculty member and Vandoren artist Bob Culbreth. Complete details and registration information can be found by here: 2016 UWG Saxophone Symposium Information and 2016 UWG Saxophone Symposium Registration Form.

For details about auditioning/applying for the Music Program at the University of West Georgia, please see here: 2016-2017 Music Application.

We hope that you will consider these wonderful opportunities while supporting a wonderful community partner. Please direct further questions to Dr. Josh Byrd at the Department of Music at UWG, or 678-839-6267.
