Governor’s Honors Program
Congratulations to Trojan Band member, Walker Camp, for his recent acceptance into the Governor’s Honors Program! GHP is a residential summer program for gifted and talented high school students who will be rising juniors and seniors during the program. The program offers instruction that is significantly different from the typical high school classroom and that is designed to provide students with academic, cultural, and social enrichment necessary to become the next generation of global critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders.
GHP is held in mid-summer (mid-June to mid-July) as a residential educational experience on a college or university campus. Students attend classes in the mornings and afternoons in specific areas of study, and they participate in a wide variety of social and instructional opportunities every evening. Meals and rooms are provided by the program with the only required and expected costs to the students being travel expenses to and from the interviews, a few basic supplies for classes and dorm rooms, and spending money as desired during the program.
Walker, a rising junior, will represent Carrollton High School at Berry College this summer as a Biology major in this prestigious summer program. We are so proud of you Walker! We hope that you have the best time and look forward to hearing about your experiences when you get back.

Below, more detailed information about what to include in your videos:
2 mins scales test (Winds and Percussion):
Please perform as many major/minor scales as you can in 2 minutes. The scales do not have to be memorized. Students will receive a maximum of 3 points per octave that is performed correctly (1 point ascending, 1 point descending, and 1 point for the arpeggio.) Mistakes may be corrected but you only have 2 minutes to complete their scales. If time runs out in the middle of a scale, you may finish that scale for full credit but will be finished at the end of that scale. Articulation and rhythm does not matter for scales, but note accuracy is imperative. Keep in mind: your scale score is not limited by anything except time. You can really earn a lot of points in this category if you practice diligently. It is rare, but not unheard of for students to perform 12 major and 12 minor scales, 2 octaves in a 2 minute period. Are you up for the challenge?
Chromatic Scale (Winds and Percussion):
Students are encouraged to demonstrate their full range by performing their chromatic scale. The chromatic scale does not have to be memorized. GMEA has requirements for recommended ranges for students who are auditioning for district honor band. Their recommendation is a great starting goal. The scale should be performed in an even rhythm both ascending and descending. Points for the chromatic scale will be awarded as follows:
Perform the Junior High School required ranges for a total of 20 points
Flute: Low C to High F
Oboe: Low C to High C
Bassoon: Low Bb to High F
Soprano Clarinet: Low E to High D above High C
Bb Low Clarinet: Low E to High A Bb
Eb Contra Alto Clarinet: Low E to High A
Alto Sax: Low C to High D
Baritone Sax: Low C to High D
Tenor Sax: Low C to High D
Trumpet: Low F# to High G
French Horn: Low F to High F
Trombone: Low E to High F
Baritone (BC): Low E to High F
Baritone (TC): Low F# to High G
Tuba: Low E to High F
Percussion: Full range of the instrument
For each additional note added to the range students may earn an additional point for their Chromatic Scale.
Bonus points: There is no specified tempo, but the evaluator has the discretion to award up to 10 bonus points for performing the scale with quality tone in all registers, speed, and exceptional evenness of the performance.
Etude (Winds and Percussion):
Download and print off your etude by following the appropriate link below:
The etude will be graded based on all of the elements of music: tone, pitch, tempo, rhythm, technique, articulations, dynamics, musicality, expression, style, etc. A compelling performance of the etude can earn you 50 points. Be sure to pay attention to the time signature, tempo marking, and key signature.
Quick Study Etude (Winds and Percussion):
Unfortunately, this format does not allow us to test sight-reading, so we are following the All-State requirements, which included a quick study etude. Students will receive access to the etude on Sunday, April 26, 2021. This etude will be similar in length to previous sight-reading examples. The percussion quick study etude will be a snare drum etude.

Trojan Band March 5K and Fun Run
Thank you so much for your support of our inaugural Trojan Band March 5K! It was a fantastic event! Special thanks to the extraordinary leadership by Shannon Waldroup, Jennifer Carden, Maria Menendez, and Zachary Nelson for much of the organization before the day of the event. And, thank you to our volunteers the day of the race who worked registration, cheered on our runners, passed out water bottles, welcomed our vendors, and worked as a vendor. In addition to our band shoppe, we also had Ms. Malmquist with our Carrollton Nutrition truck providing goodies for our runners, and AGW Ice Cream with sweet treats for all to enjoy.
The event was made possible by the following generous sponsors: Ozier Apparel, Roy’s Tire Center, Ruth’s Salads, American Pie, Wings Citi Cafe, and Tanner Medical Center.
Save the date for next year’s race: March 12, 2022.
Band BBQ • May 6, 2021
Now that we are back to a regular week, it is time to get those BBQ tickets sold! Packets went home with students before Spring break and each packet includes 25 single tickets and 5 double tickets. Each packet also included 20 raffle tickets. The raffle will be held immediately after the performance at the end of the event. The grand prize is $500. Thank you again to the parents who have graciously provided a Weber grill and a Scentsy gift basket for our 2nd and 3rd place prizes. The raffle tickets will be sold for $5 each.
We have also updated the volunteer link for this event to indicate different time slots. Please sign up (Volunteer for the BBQ) as soon as you can. We definitely need folks to help with setup and making sandwiches in the morning and then breaking down in the evening.
And don’t forget that packet turn is APRIL 30!
The CHS Scramble Trojan Band Golf Tournament will be held on June 4, 2021 at the Oak Mountain Golf course. Please help advertise the event. The cost is $400 per team and you can email chsscramble@gmail.com for more information. If you are interested in being involved with the tournament, please come to this meeting. Also, please sign up to Volunteer for the Golf Tournament as soon as possible and someone will contact you with more information.
Band Banquet • April 26
Our band banquet will be the awards ceremony only and begin at 7:00PM in the Mabry Arts Center. We ask that students and parents only attend and all in attendance are required to wear a mask. We are excited about celebrating our year, especially our seniors! They have done a terrific job leading during these very difficult times. The persistence and drive gained throughout the challenges faced will continue to serve them in their future endeavors and we look forward to celebrating with them!
2021 Band Camp
Next year our school year begins on a Monday, which does sound normal, but has not been the case for the last decade. When we began school on Thursday, it allowed us to overlap our pre-planning schedule with band camp with less critical conflicts. Our original plan to work around this was to back up band camp by a week, but we realized this appeared to start camp earlier and resulted in one less week of summer vacation for our band students. We value the time our students have with their families and do not want them to have to choose between a vacation and band camp, so we have decided to try a new schedule. We know this schedule may have some challenges as well but we hope that we can work through them together to make sure band camp is successful.
We will have a 8:00AM – 9:00PM camp from July 19 – July 23 and a 1:00PM – 9:00PM camp from July 26 – July 30. Please add these to your calendars now.
Parents, please make your child drink water all summer long and get outside. We will be mindful of helping our students acclimate to the stresses of marching band, but we will need your help to ensure that they do not arrive to camp partially dehydrated and make sure they are prepared to battle the sun.

On Friday before Spring Break we had the privilege to host a book signing for our Trojan Band member, Madison Pate, who is also a published author! We celebrated the publishing of her second book Brick of Sound 2, which is a sequel to her Brick of Sound. Many of our students took the opportunity to purchase books, speak with Madison about her process, and get her to autograph their copy of the book. Madison’s books are still available if you would like to purchase a copy from her. You can also find her books at book retailers such as Amazon and Target. Visit Madison’s website: www.Madison-Pate.com for more information.
Do you ever order from Amazon? If you do, you can order the same items on AmazonSmile for the same amount and a percentage of the purchase will be donated to the Carrollton Trojan Band Boosters.
The AmazonSmile program is a give-back program where the online retailer, Amazon, donates 0.5% of the price of eligible purchases to the Carrollton Trojan Band Boosters to support our normal operations and efforts in supporting our band. This really is a effortless way to support our band without it costing you anything extra. If you normally shop online with Amazon, you simply designate the Carrollton High School Band Boosters Club Inc. as the charitable organization that you’d like to support and that’s it… Your account will automatically be linked and then whenever you make your normal eligible purchases the band will benefit. It can’t get much easier than that to help!
To link your account, follow this link: http://smile.amazon.com/ch/58-1572206 and sign in to your Amazon account. That’s all there is to it! Share this link with your family, friends, and co-workers too so they can support us as well. If you want to take your support to the next level, share this opportunity with your Facebook Friends by simply clicking here: https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=http://smile.amazon.com/ch/58-1572206 or on share on your Twitter feed by clicking here: http://bit.ly/1mt64cX
After linking your account, whenever your shopping on Amazon, make sure your shopping at smile.amazon.com and then look for the AmazonSmile logo in the upper left-hand corner of your browser window. That’s your assurance that your purchases will benefit our program! NOTE: AmazonSmile does not work with the Amazon App for mobile devices. If you commonly shop from your smartphone or mobile device you will want to place the items you want in your shopping cart via the app but then complete your checkout in a traditional web browser on your desktop, laptop, smartphone, or mobile device in order for the AmazonSmile donation to be made.
There is no time limit on this program so we encourage you to continue to take advantage of this opportunity year-round.
If you have any specific questions you can contact the Band Boosters at: chstrojanbands@gmail.com.
