Month: January 2016

Let’s Get Busy!

busybeeIt has been an amazing year so far and now as February approaches there are lots of things coming up on the horizon, which we will highlight a few here, but you will want to make certain to keep a close eye on the calendar to ensure you are up-to-date and engaged.

  • Booster Work Day: Saturday, 1/30/2016 from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (CORRECTED TIME) at the band room – This is a date that was picked by an overwhelming majority of boosters to come together to take care of several loose ends we need to tie up as we enter another phase of our support of the band program.
    • On this day we will be working on the following items: Clean-out of old storage trailer; Disassemble last year’s props; work on new parade banner; apply sponsor magnets to large trailer (if ready); transport remaining LoC items to storage unit; work in uniform closet to prepare for dry cleaning and next season.
    • We will need people to bring various tools, brooms, trucks, etc., anything that would generally be helpful on a work-day with the given agenda.
  • Concert Attire Fitting & Trade Day: Monday, 2/1/2016  at 6:00 p.m. at the band room –  Both boys and girls will be fitted for their concert attire at this time. If you signed up to/or wish to donate, sell, or trade  gently used concert attire items like tuxedo coats, pants, and dress shirts, dresses, shoes etc., you will want to bring your items to this event  just a few minutes early to set-up.
    • Please note: If you need concert attire, whether you plan to purchase new or used, you will need to plan to be fitted on this night as all students will be required to secure Concert Band attire before our first concert.
    • If you plan/need to purchase new attire, you will not be required to pay at the time of the fitting,  you will be notified of cost at a later date. We do not have exact prices at this time, but last year’s costs wear approx. $140 for Tuxedo attire (jacket, shirt, pants, and shoes) and $100 for Dress attire (dress, shoes, and jewelry). You also have the option to only purchase what you need, pants, shoes, etc.
  • Moe’s Band Spirit Night: Tuesday, 2/2/2016, 5:oopm – 8:00pm – Moe’s Southwestern Grill , Carrollton. These have been a great boost to our fundraising efforts, so please continue to support and promote these spirit nights!
  • Wind Ensemble Rehearsals: Monday’s after school until 5:00PM.
  • Winter Guard Practices & Performances: Winter Guard has a really busy month full of practices and performances, so make sure to visit the calendar for those dates and times.
  • District Honor Band: 2/11/2016 – 2/13/2016 in Ringgold, GA. – For those selected to participate in District Honor Band, make sure you have these dates marked down. More details will be provided to these students directly.
  • Pre-Festival: 2/25/2016 – Shared Band Concert with the Junior High students, where the students will perform for adjudicator comments.
  • All-State Band: March 3 – 5 in Athens, GA at the Classic Center.  For more information please visit http://www.gmea.org/band/all-state-band/.  Students who were accepted into this need to make hotel reservations now.  Mr. Carr has a block of rooms reserved at the Hampton Inn.  If you would like any of these rooms, please contact him for information at christopher.carr@carrolltoncityschools.net.

Booster Work Day Coming Up – Help Pick the Date… Vote Now!

BoosterWordDayBelieve it or not, preparation for the 2016-2017 season will very soon be underway as we start planning for our next show, the 2016 edition of the Legacy of Champions competition and many other exciting things on the horizon! So with this in mind we need to have a Booster Work Day to wrap-up and clean-up so that we are ready to hit the ground running next month as booster activities start to ramp up.

Works days are not unlike other booster activities in regards to the fact that if we can get more people to participate, then we can get a lot of work knocked-out quickly and everyone can get back to their Saturday plans. In order to try to include as many people as possible in the work-day, we have included a poll in this post for you to participate in to help select the date of our work day. So please take five seconds and enter your vote for the date of our workday. And don’t worry, this is not a signup to work, just simply a way to gauge everyone’s availability.

Voting will be open until this Sunday, 1/23/16 at midnight. We will announce the workday date and itinerary shortly after so everyone can mark your calendars and make plans to join us.

Thanks for your time and commitment to making the Trojan Band Great!

Booster Work Day Availability Poll

Please select the date(s) you would be available to participate in a Booster Work Day.

Please note if you are reading this via email and the poll is not appearing, please visit our website, chstrojannabd.com, to cast your vote.

Great Opportunities Coming Up Next Month at UWG

UWG-For many of us who grew up in the West Georgia area I think we take for granted how blessed we are to have a thriving university like the University of West Georgia right in our back yard. When it comes to enriching our band students’ development, the university provides us with outstanding resources and opportunities without large investments of travel, time, and finances. There are two such opportunities coming up in February that Dr. Josh Byrd, Director of Bands at UWG wanted us to share with you.

First is the Destination: Music event, which takes place on February 15 and is open to high school juniors and seniors interested in checking out a day in the life of a music student.  Complete details and registration information can be found by here: Destination Music 2016 Complete Info

Also taking place the same day will be UWG’s Scholarship Day, where students will have the opportunity to interview for Presidential Scholarships.  For students interested in this event as well, please register using the following Scholarship Day link (note: students must be accepted to the University by February 1 in order to be considered for the Presidential Awards from this event).

Next up is UWG’s 12th Annual Saxophone Symposium, which takes place on February 20. This is a great opportunity for students to work on anything and everything related to the saxophone with Dr. John Bleuel as well as participate in a reed and sound clinic with UWG faculty member and Vandoren artist Bob Culbreth. Complete details and registration information can be found by here: 2016 UWG Saxophone Symposium Information and 2016 UWG Saxophone Symposium Registration Form.

For details about auditioning/applying for the Music Program at the University of West Georgia, please see here: 2016-2017 Music Application.

We hope that you will consider these wonderful opportunities while supporting a wonderful community partner. Please direct further questions to Dr. Josh Byrd at the Department of Music at UWG, jbyrd@westga.edu or 678-839-6267.

GO WEST!  GO WOLVES!!!
