Uniform reminder

Good morning!

Just a quick reminder to our students to go ahead and bring in your garment bag so that you can stage your uniform to be loaded for our Disney trip! Remember to have your black shirt, socks, shoes, gloves, gauntlets, jacket, bibbers, and to stage your shako. Put them in your garment bag and place them on the racks by section to be loaded. We are loading tomorrow after school, so please take care of this today or tomorrow morning.

Students should stage their instrument to be loaded after class on Tuesday. This way we can load everything Tuesday afternoon and all that we will have to load on Wednesday morning is our luggage.

Looking forward to a great trip to Disney!

Cale Self Tuba Euphonium Recital at UWG – Featuring Will Pitts!

Hello!  On Sunday at 5:30PM in UWG’s Cashen Recital Hall located in the Humanities Building, Dr. Self is performing a recital of music for euphonium and tuba.  He will be accompanied by one of my best friends, Wayne Gilreath, and will be premiering a piece titled “Good Cop, Bad Cop” by Carrollton High School’s distinguished alumnus Will Pitts!  If you are available, please go check it out.

Here is Dr. Self’s bio from his UWG Faculty Page:

Cale Self is Assistant Professor of Music, Assistant Director of Bands, and Instructor of Low Brass at the University of West Georgia in beautiful Carrollton, GA. Also serving as the Director of Athletic Bands, Dr. Self directs “The Sound That Lights the South” Marching Band and the “Wolfgang” Basketball Pep Band. He also conducts the UWG Symphonic Band and Brass Ensemble, teaches brass and instrumental methods courses, and supervises student teachers.

Holding degrees in music education and instrumental conducting from West Texas A&M University in Canyon, TX, Dr. Self also holds a doctorate in euphonium performance from the University of Georgia in Athens. His teachers include David Zerkel, John Lynch, Allen Crowell, Patrick Sheridan, Sam Pilafian, Gary Garner, Joe Nelson, and Joseph Cox. He has participated in lessons and masterclasses with Christian Badea, Marty Erickson, Adam Frey, Sarah McKoin, Tim Northcut, Demondrae Thurman, and Charles Villarubia.

In the summertime, Dr. Self is the Dean of Students at the Brevard Music Center in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. In that capacity, he administers the non-musical side of life at BMC, supervising a staff of 4 assistant deans and 35 resident advisors as well as over 400 student musicians who study at the music center each summer. Dr. Self is also an active musician at BMC as a regular performer in the orchestral, wind band, and chamber music programs.

Dr. Self has performed for the Texas Music Educators and Texas Bandmasters Associations, the College Band Directors National Association, the International Tuba Euphonium Association, the Southeast Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference, the US Army Band Tuba Euphonium Conference, the BOA National Concert Band Festival, and the National Band and Orchestra Festival at Carnegie Hall. A two-time concerto competition winner, Dr. Self was also a finalist in the 2006 International Tuba Quartet competition as a member of the UGA Tuba Quartet. He is also active and passionate about commissioning new works for the euphonium, having participated in consortiums that have resulted in four new works for the instrument within the past two years. Dr. Self maintains a diverse and multi-faceted performing schedule as a director, soloist, conductor, adjudicator, arranger, and teacher.

Kiwanis Art and Music Showcase

Good afternoon!

The Kiwanis Club of Carrollton is hosting their Annual Art and Music Showcase in February!  This is a great opportunity for students to show off their talents in a solo or chamber music environment and an opportunity to possible earn some money towards college!  I especially encourage our students who are currently studying privately because you most likely already have something that you can perform for this event, but I welcome all students to see me for more information.
You can download more information here.  You can also see Mr. Carr for an application and information. The application deadline is February 4, 2015.  First through fifth place prizes with scholarships ranging from $500-$100 respectively!  Best of luck!!!
